Large Cash Amounts at Australian Airports Must Be Declared to AUSTRAC. The Bigger Money Problem Sits Forgotten in Superannuation.
The real money most Australians lose isn’t seized at a border — it’s sitting forgotten in superannuation: A$21.2 billion, across almost 7.5 million accounts, as at 30 June 2026. The AUSTRAC rule requiring travellers to declare large cash amounts at Australian airports is real and applies to every traveller, but it isn’t the money problem most people actually have.

Where the A$21.2 billion actually sits
An account becomes “lost” when a fund can’t contact a member, or hasn’t received a contribution or rollover in 5 years — usually for an ordinary reason: changing jobs, changing your name, or moving house without updating every fund you’ve ever had.
- Lost super still held by fundsA$14.7 billion / 356,000 accounts
- Unclaimed super held by the ATOA$6.6 billion / 7.13 million accounts
- Total, as at 30 June 2026A$21.2 billion
If you find more than one account, here's what the choice looks like
Consolidating into one fund can mean paying one set of fees instead of several. Before closing anything, the honest comparison is long-term performance, since that is the figure that compounds over decades. Below are the 10-year returns SuperRatings published for five well-known funds' default Balanced options, for the year to 30 June 2026 — not a recommendation, a starting point. L'Abeille Advertising may receive a referral payment if you open an account through a link below; this does not affect the returns shown, which come from SuperRatings' own published data.

The one thing worth checking before you close any account: insurance. Many super accounts carry default life or total-and-permanent-disability cover, and closing the account usually cancels it. If you have a health condition you've developed since that cover started, replacing it elsewhere is not guaranteed to be possible on the same terms. Check what's attached before you consolidate, not after.
FAQ
Does this site search for my lost super?
No. L'Abeille Advertising does not access, search or hold anyone's superannuation information. The free ATO tool linked above is the actual search.
Is the AU$21.2 billion figure real?
Yes — it is the ATO's own published total for lost (fund-held) and ATO-held super as at 30 June 2026, last updated by the ATO on 18 August 2026. See the source below.
Should I move my super to whichever fund has the highest return?
Not automatically. Past performance isn't guaranteed to continue, fees and insurance differ between funds, and your own circumstances (age, risk tolerance, existing cover) matter more than one ranking. This page is general information, not personal advice.
Is this connected to the Sydney Airport cash story?
Only as a comparison: both are about money that technically belongs to someone but isn't where it should be. The AUSTRAC declaration rule and the ATO's lost-super data are two separate, real things referenced accurately on this page.
