She could keep basil alive for a week. The western courtyard in Marrickville finished it before she got home from work.

Sponsored advertising disclosure

This sponsored advertorial is published by L'Abeille Advertising for a product sold by VEGEPOD PTY LTD. It contains a fictional illustration of a typical Australian courtyard-gardening problem. It is not independent journalistic reporting. Dana is not a real customer and this is not a testimonial. Individual results vary with weather, soil, plants and care.

Dana rents a terrace in Marrickville. The backyard is a strip of brick, a Hills hoist, and a courtyard that cooks from about 11am. She bought terracotta pots, a bag of mix from the local nursery, and a tray of basil, parsley and cherry tomatoes. She watered them at 7:15 before the train. By the time she unlocked the side gate after six, the leaves were paper.

Digging up the landlord's patch was not an option. A two-metre family bed was not an option either: the courtyard is a strip. She needed a compact covered bed that could sit on the bricks, keep the worst of the afternoon off the leaves, and not rely on her being home at 2pm with a watering can.

That is a common small-space problem in Australian cities. The story above is an illustration. The product below is real, currently sold in Australia, and is the only product this page is advertising.

Same product, cover closed. Official Vegepod photograph. The cover is included with this bed. A stand is not.

Vegepod describes the bed as a wicking container: water sits in a reservoir under the mix and moves up toward the roots. The cover is a polyethylene knitted mesh that Vegepod says keeps some pests and harsh sun off while letting water and air through. Those are manufacturer explanations, not a yield promise from this publisher.

Vegepod also says a full reservoir can last up to about three weeks in hot weather. That depends on plants, wind, and how well the reservoir was filled. It is not a guarantee that you can ignore the bed.

This page does not claim you will recoup the bed from grocery bills, grow a set number of vegetables, or replace a farm. Growing food in a 1 m × 0.5 m bed still takes mix, seed or seedlings, light, and some attention.
